Say it Ain’t So: Chili Peppers are Red Hot

Wednesday, November 21st, 2007

xfile

The Red Hot Chili Peppers filed a suit Monday against Showtime Networks claiming its Californication show pays just a little too much respect to their 1999 album of the same name. Understandable I suppose. The thing that makes me slap my forehead in wonder is the quote by frontman Anthony Kiedis:

“Californication is the signature CD, video and song of the band’s career, and for some TV show to come along and steal our identity is not right.”

Maybe it’s just me, but when I think of the Chili Peppers, Californication, be it the song, album, or video, is not the first thing that comes to mind. Don’t get me wrong, I loved the album. It was my lawn-mowing soundtrack of 2000. I just think that accusing a network of stealing their identity is a slight overreaction. I’d like to think they could spend their time a little more wisely, like maybe writing a new album that isn’t as schizophrenic as their last one.
