Digital TV Transition Begins Today

Tuesday, February 17th, 2009

While the government officially delayed the analog to digital TV switch until June 12th, 641 small-market stations are still flipping the switch today, mainly in thinly populated areas. So basically, the stations in the markets where people probably still use rabbit-ear antennae and, thus, will be most affected by the switch are the ones going ahead with the original date. Bravo. 3D: A Fad that Died in the 80’s Returns from the Grave

Monday, February 2nd, 2009

I’m not going to pretend like I remember what it was like in the 80’s when new movies were released in theaters in 3D. I actually got the worst side of it, seeing these movies on VHS years later, forced to sit and watch a yo-yo dangle precariously above the camera in a kind of “whoooaaa watch out, it might hit you!” moment that someone once thought would be awesome. I can understand why films like Friday the 13th part 3 and Jaws 3D were made that way. It was cutting edge at the time, a way to immerse the audience in the film like never before. Plus, no one actually saw those films so it was OK to experiment. The big flaw was that the filmmakers didn’t think ahead beyond the theater. Home entertainment hadn’t developed much so there was no reason to plan for it. Now here we are 25 years later, forced to relive this bad idea in our own homes. (more…)

Congress Could Delay Digital TV Switch Until June 12th (UPDATED)

Tuesday, January 27th, 2009

UPDATE: The House voted down the bill in question so the digital TV switch will take place on February 17th.

Surely you’ve noticed all the commercials and PSA’s regarding the nation’s switch from analog television signals to digital. It’s become pretty annoying considering it will only affect a very small amount of the population. Well, be prepared to listen to it for another 4 months. The Senate just approved a delay that will set the switch back until June 12th with Congress ready to approve it as early as today. (more…)

Lost Premiere Tonight at 9pm Eastern

Wednesday, January 21st, 2009

The time has come yet again for the season premiere of Lost on ABC. If you haven’t watched Lost at all, you are missing out on one of the most intense, gripping television experiences ever. Also, you’d be 4 seasons behind so you’ve got some catching-up to do.

Speaking of seasons, this is the premiere of its 5th season. If you remember, in March of last year we posted a prediction of what Walt, one of the younger characters on the show, would look like in season 5. He had a growth spurt after the second season and was suddenly like a foot taller with a deeper voice. I wonder if our prediction will ring true. (more…)

Review – Samsung LN46A550 46″ LCD HDTV

Friday, December 5th, 2008

I searched high and low for the best possible TV I could get for the lowest possible price. I’ve already got a 32″ so it had to be bigger than that, and my parents recently picked up a 52″ and I decided that was too big. I settled on the 46″ Samsung 500 series because it was a smaller version of what my parents got and I liked theirs a lot. Luckily, I haven’t been disappointed. (more…)

The Dumbass’s Guide to HDTVs

Thursday, December 4th, 2008

One of the easiest ways to tell how cool a dude is is to take a look at his TV. If it’s not HD, there’s something seriously wrong. But just because a TV is “HD” doesn’t mean it’s good. There are a lot of things that factor into what makes an HDTV good but all the numbers that get thrown at you can be confusing. Don’t worry, dumbass. We’re here to steer you in the right direction. We Bid You a Fond Fairwell, Mojo HD!

Tuesday, December 2nd, 2008

Yesterday, December 1st, was a very bitter sweet day for me.  All day I was psyched about getting my brand new 47″ HD TV (a full inch bigger than fellow average dude Scott’s TV).  It was like Christmas day a full 25 days ahead of schedule only to be sorely let down.  I went to turn on my favorite HD channel Mojo only to find a crappy Christmas movie.  I hit info on the guide to see my beloved channel was now Hallmark Movie Channel.  I flipped out and went straight to the internet.

I quickly found out that the entire channel was pulled off air.  It turns out the channel was a collected venture by most of the major cable companies to provide as much HD content on their lineup.  Since more and more HD channels are popping up, they felt they no longer had to fill that void.  So people like me that became a loyal fan of just about every show they had is screwed. TVs Back! So What Are You Watching?

Thursday, October 16th, 2008

One of the first stories we posted on Average Dudes was about the Writers Strike last year. It was a devastating time in the lives of Americans. With a lack of new, original shows to watch, weeknights became mundane…some poor dudes were even forced to read or have conversations with their spouses. It’s a time I’d like to forget completely. SNL Is Having Small Progressions In The Funny Dept.

Monday, October 6th, 2008

I just got done with a lunch conversation stating how much I thought SNL has slid over the years.  Despite their recent run of Sarah Palin videos, they’ve really been lacking in talent.

Insert foot in mouth because I just saw a clip from this weeks show and it’s pretty damn funny.
